What is Melanotan I (MT-1)?
Melanotan I (MT-1), also known as Afamelanotide,
is a synthetic analog of the naturally occurring peptide hormone α-Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone (α-MSH).
MT-1 binds to melanocortin receptors, stimulating the production of melanin in skin cells.
Research has focused on its ability to increase pigmentation, protect against UV damage,
and potentially reduce the risk of skin cancers.
MT-1 differs from MT-2 in that it is more selective and has fewer systemic effects,
making it a key peptide in pigmentation and photoprotection research.

MT-1 Research
1. Skin Pigmentation
Melanotan I has been shown to stimulate melanin production in skin cells,
leading to increased pigmentation and natural tanning.
This may provide protective effects against UV radiation.
2. Photoprotection
Research indicates that MT-1 may reduce UV-induced DNA damage in skin cells,
suggesting potential for lowering skin cancer risks in susceptible populations.
3. Dermatological Applications
MT-1 has been investigated in conditions such as erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP),
where patients have extreme sensitivity to sunlight. Studies suggest MT-1 improves tolerance to sunlight exposure.
4. Comparison to MT-2
Unlike MT-2, which is associated with systemic effects such as appetite suppression and sexual arousal,
MT-1 is more targeted for pigmentation with a safer research profile.
Future MT-1 Research
Future studies may explore MT-1’s broader dermatological applications,
including prevention of photoaging, treatment of rare skin sensitivity disorders,
and further protective effects against melanoma and other skin cancers.
